On Monday, the remaining contestants on American Idol once again took the stage for what could be the last time. Singing for a place in the Top 7, each singer needed to perform a song specifically selected from the judges Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan, and Carrie Underwood. Among those who made it into the Top 7 was none other than fan favorite John Foster. Performing “I Cross My Heart” from George Strait, it seemed that Foster was a frequent visitor to Strait Country as he shared a special cover of “Amarillo By Morning.”
Although Strait produced numerous classic country hits, “Amarillo By Morning” is easily in the top 5. Surrounding a rodeo cowboy driving through the night from San Antonio to Amarillo, the man pondered on the life decisions that led him to suffer broken bones, poverty, and even a divorce. Having to endure pain throughout his life, the cowboy didn’t look for sympathy as he considered himself nothing but free with the lyrics, “I ain’t rich/ But Lord, I’m free.”
Simply putting his camera up and hitting record, Foster offered fans a look at his talents beyond American Idol. He didn’t try to make the song his own, but used the song to showcase his love for one of the biggest legends in country music. And if that wasn’t clear, the poster of Strait in the background was more than enough.
Receiving thousands of views, fans showered Foster with praise. “Dang son! That brought tears to my eyes. Just beautiful.” Another comment included, “Wow!!! Where have you been? What a fantastic voice!!! Great future ahead. Strive to be a good example and you will go far.”
